What Is Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

What is Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

Testosterone is one of the primary drivers of typically “masculine” characteristics in men. It is a sex hormone produced by the testes and results in characteristics such as sex drive, muscle mass and facial hair development. As we age blood testosterone levels drop from the age of 30 by 1-2% per year on average. This means our testosterone levels in our 50s may be up to 50% lower than it was in our 20s.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a form of medical therapy in which clients use external testosterone to replace their deficiency in the hormone. The purpose of TRT is to restore serum testosterone to healthy levels within natural norms. Studies seem to indicate this can somewhat ‘rewind the clock’, restoring vitality and athleticism to peak levels.

How does testosterone change with age?

As we age, a gradual and often unnoticed decline in testosterone levels will occur. This natural process typically starts in the late 20s to early 30s, with levels falling by approximately 1-2% each year. While the drop is subtle at first, its effects can accumulate, leading to noticeable changes in how a man feels, performs, and lives.

Because these symptoms often appear gradually, they’re sometimes dismissed as inevitable signs of aging. But low testosterone is a medical condition — not just “getting older.” Identifying the cause through a simple blood test can be the first step to restoring balance, performance, and confidence.

How does TRT help?

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) involves the administration of bioidentical testosterone — typically through topical gels, tablets, or injectable formulations — to restore hormone levels in men with clinically low testosterone.

The aim of TRT is not to exceed natural limits, but to bring your testosterone levels back into the optimal range commonly seen in your 20s and 30s. By doing so, we address the wide range of symptoms associated with testosterone deficiency, including fatigue, low mood, reduced muscle mass, poor concentration, and diminished libido.

Importantly, TRT differs from the use of anabolic steroids, which are often misused to elevate testosterone to supraphysiological levels for performance enhancement. At Karma Health, our approach is medically supervised, evidence-based, and focused on long-term wellbeing.

When prescribed and monitored appropriately, TRT can raise testosterone levels by up to 200%, leading to meaningful improvements in both physical and mental health.

Other factors affecting testosterone

Blood testosterone levels reduce as we age, therefore it is common for men over 40 to suffer with low testosterone levels. The American Urology Association estimate that up to 50% of all men may have symptoms of low testosterone. In addition to age, several other factors may contribute to low testosterone levels, these include:

– High body fat levels
– Previous anabolic steroid use
– Chronic pain patients, such as those taking opiates
– Patients with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, lung disease or kidney disease
– Chronic Stress
– Excessive Alcohol Consumption
– Patients on antidepressants
– Previous cancer patients
– Inherited medical conditions

What are the symptoms of testosterone deficiency?

Testosterone is a crucial hormone responsible for various functions, including maintaining muscle mass, bone density, mood stability, and sexual health. As men age, it’s natural for testosterone levels to decline. However, some individuals experience a more significant decrease, leading to symptoms such as:

– Reduced energy levels
– Decreased libido
– Mood disturbances
– Loss of muscle mass
– Increased body fat
