A DEXA Scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the gold-standard assessment for evaluating body composition and bone health with exceptional precision. It goes far beyond a standard scale or BMI, offering a detailed view of fat distribution, lean muscle mass, bone density, and overall metabolic health.

With fragility fractures now recognised as one of the leading risk factors for early mortality and long-term morbidity in older adults, maintaining strong, dense bones is essential for healthy ageing. Regular interval DEXA scans allow for the early detection of bone loss (osteopenia or osteoporosis), helping to guide interventions that reduce fracture risk and protect you from life-altering breaks as you age.

Due to the minimal radiation risk, all scans are performed off-site at a partner facility. Review of results is performed by the doctors at Karma Health either in-person at our Deansgate clinic or remotely.

DEXA scans are particularly valuable for clients who may be at risk of thin or brittle bones, including postmenopausal women, older adults, and those with a family history of osteoporosis. In fact, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends periodic DEXA screening for all women aged 65 and older, and for younger women with risk factors,  underlining its importance as part of a comprehensive preventative health strategy.

How are DEXAs with Karma Health performed?

The DEXA is conducted with our partner facility. The scan is quick, safe, and non-invasive, using low-dose X-ray technology to capture images while you lie comfortably on the scanning table. The process typically takes 10–15 minutes, with no special preparation required.

Results are then sent to the doctors at Karma Health for review, and a report is generated. Your clinician will then contact you for a review of the results as well as further advice.
